Undisputed UNGU

This pop group from Jakarta, named after the color purple, drew serious numbers to Kuta live venue, Kama Sutra, on March 10th, proving their crowd pulling abilities to any with doubts. UNGU vocalist, Pasha, displayed his talents as a frontman as he chatted amiably with the audience, told some jokes, and even pulled up a member of the audience to participate in a light hearted contest for a free t-shirt. Musically, the crowd dug what they heard as evidenced by sing-a-long participation and jump ‘n bump movement during the performance to numbers such as “Meleyang” (Floating) and “Jika Itu Yang Terbaik” (If That’s the Best). Judging from the 700 plus audience turnout, it would appear that UNGU aren’t going anywhere but up.
Interview with UNGU
UNGU is perhaps not yet a household name in terms of pop groups, but this Jakarta band is definitely going places. They gave the beat a few minutes before their Kama Sutra appearance to answer some questions.
Beat : Welcome to paradise! Is this your first tour in Bali?
UNGU : It’s our third time here, actually. We played at the Soundrenaline festival before (Indonesia’s version of The Big Day Out).
Beat : Have there been any juicy rumours surrounding your band?
UNGU : Hmmmm….nothing big so far. Just a few folks saying that we are breaking up, etc.
Beat : As a young group, who are the biggest celebrities in your cell phone address book?
UNGU : We have Dewa Budjana’s (Balinese guitarist for Gigi) digits as well as Ariel and Reza’s (of Peterpan) numbers.
Beat : What’s the strangest thing on your dressing room rider (list of band necessities)?
UNGU : Pasha (vocalist) doesn’t want a dressing room with air conditioning!
Beat : Do you have any good stories about band experiences?
UNGU : Once, when we were on stage, there was a girl in the front row that fell into trance and the spirit that possessed her sounded like a 7 year old girl who said she really wanted to see us live!
Ooh…spooky! UNGU even appear to attract fans from the nether regions! Don’t miss their next Bali gig. You won’t be disappointed.
